Green Army
Walkatjurra Ranger Projects supported by the Green Army
The Walkatjurra Rangers and Marnta Media Pty Ltd will be supported by the Australian Government’s Green Army Programme based in Leonora Western Australia. Marnta Media were successful in securing two Green Army projects this financial year and a third next year under our Walkatjurra Rangers arm.
1. Walkatjurra Rangers Mt Leonora Aboriginal Heritage Site Management Plan, Stage 2
The first activity will be to implement Stage 2 of the Mt Leonora Aboriginal Heritage Site Management Plan, this work will include working with Aboriginal Elders and knowledge holders in Leonora to manage visitor impacts on Mt Leonora. Mt Leonora is an important Aboriginal site, there are cultural protocols which need to be observed and importantly an Aboriginal Heritage Site Management Plan drafted with the support of the Department of Aboriginal Affairs and will form the blueprint of our work. The most pressing work is to stop vehicles from driving up the hill and creating erosion impacts.
2. Walkatjurra Rangers Indigenous knowledge, Use and Maintenance
The second activity will take the Walkatjurra Rangers back to our core strengths of working with Traditional knowledge holders on cultural heritage and environmental work using multimedia to document and record traditional ecological knowledge. We will work with identified elders and custodians to record and share Aboriginal traditional knowledge through our Bush camps, activities that engage school children to share traditional knowledge about country, producing publications or multimedia for children to share knowledge about country, back-to-country trips, including Walkatjurra Walkabout with traditional owners and activities with young people to clean rock holes and transfer knowledge, working with scientists to share and record knowledge about species or management practices.
3. Walkatjurra Rangers Green Army Nambi Rd and Katampul Village land management
Walkatjurra Rangers Green Army Team will work to support the management of erosion and revegation of community lands at Katampul and the waterways associated with Nambi road, including the removal of debris. This activity featuring basic erosion control, revegetation and debris removal at the Katampul community will support the cultural and environmental outcomes for that community and surrounding township of Leonora.
